Go or stay.

By Bobby Burcham.

One day a man was walking home from hard days work in town.

He walked by a cool spring and it spoke to him. It said, “Go on your way, or drink. If you have no thirst, then travel on.”

It angered the man that the spring seemed to be so conceited so he passed on. Also he wanted to get home.

Later he passed by a shady oak and it said, “Go on your way, or stop and enjoy my shade. If you are not hot and tired then don’t partake of my shade that is free to all to enjoy.”

Again the man was angered that a tree would speak to him and imply that he needed the tree.

When he got home his wife had a banquet like table of delicious food set out for him. The food spoke to him and said, “Go, or eat. If you have no hunger, then pass on by.”

Again his pride was bruised so he refused to eat immediately. He went to his couch and was going to take a rest and it also spoke to him, “Go, or lie down. If you are not tired and sleepy, then take your body somewhere else.”

He went to set by his library and the books spoke to him, “Go, or read. If you are not hungry for the knowledge, then find something that is more interesting.”

Suddenly his wife walked in from doing chores out side. She first asked why he was not eating and he lied and explained that he wanted to rest first.

As she turned to go her way the man thought he heard her say, “It was me who spoke to you.”

He asked rudely, “What did you just say?”

She turned and said, “Nothing dear. Rest until you are ready to eat.”

She walked on and he heard her say, “It was me, Love, speaking to you.”

He had doubted that she loved him because it had been a long time since she had actually told him she loved him. He had also been tempted to flirt with more beautiful and more desirable ladies in town.

He stood and went to her. He stopped her and said, “I want to know something. Don’t you ever worry what I am doing when I leave here?”

She smiled and said, “Dear, if you wish to find someone else you are free to do so. If I cannot keep you wanting to come home of your free will, what would I profit to worry about what you are doing or about you not coming home?”

The man thought about her answer for several seconds and went to eat his meal.

The end.
